Well, week 2 is here and it's time for our picks and predictions. Week 1 saw some great action and we hope for the same tonight. Here's our picks:
Highlands (2-0) @ Beechwood (0-2)
This game is the nkysports.com game of the week and can be viewed live at nkysports.com. Myself and Lee Witte will be covering the action in Fort Mitchell. Beechwood comes in 0-2 after dropping one to Dixie 47-7 last Saturday in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showcase. Highlands on the other hand started out slow but improved to 2-0 after an impressive performance against Ryle, scoring 34 straight en route to a 37-14 win.
Predictions:
Lee: I have to go with the Bluebirds who should take advantage of their size and numbers. However, the Tigers certainly will play better than they did last week according to Coach Rash.
Highlands 44
Beechwood 16
Ryan: Beechwood is down this year and Highlands has one of their best teams ever. The Birds size, speed and athleticism will be too much for the Tigers.
Highlands 49
Beechwood 14
Dixie (2-0) @ Simon Kenton (1-0)
Dixie was impressive in routing Beechwood 47-7 last week to improve to 2-0. Simon Kenton on the other hand played without star Miles Simpson and still was able to walk out of Nippert Stadium with a 29-8 win over Newcath.
Predictions:
Lee: This will be one of the best games of the year in a clash of Kenton County Schools. Expect a shootout as many teams have many offensive weapons. I am going with the Pioneers at home.
Simon Kenton 37
Dixie Heights 24
Ryan: Dixie has looked impressive so far but against two smaller teams who couldn't match their size or athleticism. SK will provide match up problems for the Colonels and are deep at multiple positions. I like the Neers.
Simon Kenton 28
Dixie Heights 17
Holmes (1-0) @ Bellevue (1-1)
The Bulldogs will travel to Bellevue in week 2 to take on the Tigers. Holmes comes in 1-0 after an impressive 41-12 win over Lloyd, while Bellevue comes in 1-1 after beating Newport 40-24 last week.
Predictions:
Lee: The Tigers are a very good class A squad and have a power running game led by Buckler/Slater but I'm not too sure they can stop the overall team speed of Holmes. The Bulldog QB has been very impressive and should have a big night spoiling the Tigers home opener. The Tigers will be a better team for facing a speedy Bulldogs team, though.
Holmes 38
Bellevue 22
Ryan: Holmes is much improved and more experienced than years' past. Look for Holmes' team speed to cause a lot of problems for the Tigers on both sides of the ball. Damien Oden (wr/rb) and Jesse Jensen (qb) both had huge games last week against Lloyd. I like the Dogs on the road.
Holmes 34
Bellevue 14
Conner (2-0) @ Lloyd (0-1)
Conner will travel to Erlanger to take on the Juggs. The Cougars come in 2-0 after beating Scott 40-7 last week, while the Juggs are coming off a 41-12 loss to Holmes.
Predictions:
Lee: Conner is an offensive machine led by Qb Nick West who leads NKY in scoring with 6 td's and 1 xp. The Juggs struggled offensively in their opening game and I expect that to continue as they fall at home.
Conner 36
Lloyd 6
Ryan: Not much to really say about this game, other than the Cougars high powered offense will be way too much for the Juggs.
Conner: 42
Lloyd: 7
Cooper (1-0) @ Scott (0-1)
The Jags will travel to Taylor Mill to take on the Eagles. Cooper comes in 1-0 after upsetting Louisville Shawnee last week, while Scott is coming off a 40-7 loss to Conner.
Predictions:
Lee: Cooper is a much improved team led by junior Rb/Lb Dvontae Bradley, while Scott is struggling. I like Cooper on the road picking up their second victory of the season.
Cooper 24
Scott 8
Ryan: This game is a toss up IMO. Scott looked really bad against Conner in week one, but Cooper is no Conner. I think Bradley for Cooper is the difference in this one though.
Cooper 28
Scott 21
As for the rest of the games:
Lasalle, OH @ Covcath
Lee: Lasalle 40-14
Ryan: Lasalle 31-23
Roger Bacon, OH @ Campbell Co
Lee: Roger Bacon 32-18
Ryan: Roger Bacon 35-21
Newcath @ Madison Central
Lee: Newcath 14-7
Ryan: Newcath 28-10
Pendleton Co @ Newport
Lee: Newport 21-13
Ryan: Newport 27-21
