I've been informed that Boone County senior point guard, Mike Gabbard has landed his first offer from Division II Ashland University. As a junior, Gabbard averaged 9.3 ppg, 3.8 apg, and 2 spg. Gabbard was a key piece to the Rebels finishing 26-5 on the season and making it all the way to the region championship, where they were defeated by eventual state champ, Holmes, 32-29. Gabbard was the starting point guard for Shining Stars-Mcfarland this summer and helped lead them to a 46-9 record. During that stretch, they went undefeated throughout pool play in every tournament his team participated in.
Also for the Rebels, interest is starting to pick up for Ryan Popp from the smaller schools. Ohio Dominican, Thomas More, Mount St. Joseph, Rockhurst, Union, and Lindsey Wilson have all showed interest in the 6'0 guard. Popp didn't play as much as expected this past season at the high school level, but had an outstanding summer with Shining Stars black. Popp will be counted on to step in as a starter this coming season after averaging 5 ppg last season off the bench.
Together, Popp and Gabbard form one of the best backcourts in Northern Kentucky. Look for big things out of both players this coming season.
