Highlands cracks USA Today Top 25

Heading in to this season coach Dale Mueller of Highlands listed "national champions" as one of his team goals. His players bought in to the statement and it was on full display this past Friday as the Birds knocked off Cincinnati St. Xavier 12-7 in a nationally televised game. The win over the Bombers, ranked 16th by the USA Today Top 25 poll heading in to Friday's game, has catapulted the Birds in to the USA Today top 25 at #23. Here is a look at where the Fort Thomas squad stands in various national rankings:

USA Today Top 25:
23. Highlands, Fort Thomas, KY (6-0)
Previous: not ranked
Result: Defending Kentucky 5A champion defeated then #16 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) 12-7 as QB Will Bardo rushed for 133 yards and a 4 yard TD.

The two time defending class 5A state champions had gone winless in their last 9 games against three other Cincinnati powers- Elder, Moeller, and Colerain. Highlands never trailed and held the Bombers scoreless until the final 27 seconds. The Bluebirds play Dixie Heights on Friday.

Week 6 Predictions

Well week 6 is here and it should be a fun one as many teams get in to district play. A lot of big games tonight and it's football weather...rain, mud, and cool temperatures. Here's our predictions for this week:

St. Xavier, OH (4-0) @ Highlands (5-0)

In this nationally televised game, the Bombers of St. X will come across the river and take on the Bluebirds. Highlands has historically struggled against big Cincy schools but could this be the year they finally pull one out?

Predictions:

Lee: The Birds should be able to hang with the Bombers for a half, but in the end they won't be able to overcome the depth and numbers that St. X brings. The Bombers should win by 3 td's.

St. X- 35
Highlands- 14

Ryan: Offensively, the Birds should be able to move the ball and put some points up on the board. Defensively though, I think X size up front will be too much for the undersized D-line to stop.

St. X- 38
Highlands- 17

Conner (5-0) @ Simon Kenton (3-1)

In a key 6A district game, the Cougars of Conner will travel to Independence to take on the Pioneers. This game has all the makings of a classic and could be the first step for one of these two teams getting the #1 seed in the playoffs.

Prediction:

Lee: SK should be pumped for this match up coming off the loss to Henry Clay. I think they win at home against a very explosive Conner Cougar team. Look for Miles Simpson to have a career night.

SK- 42
Conner- 36

Ryan: With the rain not slowing up any, this game looks to favor the Neers and Rb Miles Simpson. However, I still like the Cougars. They seem to be the more complete team of the two.

Conner- 35
SK- 31

Dayton (0-4) @ Beechwood (1-3)

In a 1A district game, the Greendevils will travel to Fort Mitchell to take on the Tigers of Beechwood. Dayton has struggled early as his Beechwood. Can the Devils upset the Beechies?

Prediction:

Lee: Dayton will be the red-headed stepchild in this one as the Tigers are looking for an opponent they can give a beat down to. This one will get ugly real quick.

Beechwood- 61
Dayton- 0

Ryan: Dayton lost to Newport 56-0....Beechwood has struggled early but they are much better than the Wildcats. I like the Beechies in a romp.

Beechwood- 56
Dayton- 0

Campbell Co (2-2) @ Boone Co (1-3)

In another key 6A district game, the Camels travel to Florence to take on the Rebels in the nkysports.com game of the week. Boone has played a tough early season schedule but will they have enough to win at home against Campbell?

Prediction:

Lee: This is a toss up as both teams have shown glimpses of looking pretty good and also being somewhat bad football teams. I like Boone Co. at home as Quainoo goes off.

Boone Co- 36
Campbell Co- 18

Ryan: Campbell has struggled against good running teams early on. Although Boone isn't what they normally are, the rain should favor them in this one as Campbell likes to primarily pass the ball.

Boone Co- 35
Campbell Co-14

Holmes (4-0) @ Pendleton Co (3-1)

The Dogs travel to Falmouth take on the Wildcats of Pendleton Co in a 4A district game. Pendleton has played Holmes in a few years, but the last two times they've played have been blowouts. Will this year be any different?

Prediction

Lee: The Bulldogs continue their winning ways and run all over the Wildcats.

Holmes- 42
Pendleton- 12

Ryan: Too much speed and athleticism for Holmes on both sides of the ball for the Cats to overcome. Holmes rolls.

Holmes- 49
Pendleton- 7

Cooper (2-2) @ Ryle (3-1)

The Jags are coming in to this one off a heart-breaking loss to the Juggs of Lloyd, as they led 35-14 but ended up losing 36-35 in the closing seconds. Cooper is improved but are they improved enough to give the Raiders a game?

Prediction

Lee: Ryle will show the Jags who the best team in Boone Co. is this week and they will win in convincing fashion. Look for the Hempel/Nichols connection to show up in this one.

Ryle- 28
Cooper- 12

Ryan: Cooper is improved but not improved enough to stick with the Raiders. Look for Elliott to have a huge game.

Ryle- 49
Cooper- 14

Dixie Heights (2-3) @ Scott (1-3)

The Red Colonels travel to Taylor Mill to take on the Eagles of Scott after a big homecoming loss to Ryle last week. Scott has improved each week but have they improved enough to pick a district win?

Prediction:

Lee: Look for the Colonels to get back on track with a big win over the Eagles.

Dixie- 48
Scott- 12

Ryan: Dixie has too many weapons offensively for the Eagles to stop. Dixie rolls big.

Dixie- 49
Scott- 0

Newcath (1-4) @ Covcath (2-3)

The Breds will travel to Park Hills Saturday afternoon to take on the Colonels in what has developed in to a nice rivalry over the past few years. Covcath has improved each week while Newcath has struggles at times.

Prediction

Lee: This may be the second best game this week next to the Conner/SK match up. Newcath is hungry and looking for a win while the Colonels have been the most improved team in NKY this year, IMO. I expect a close one with the Colonels pulling it out.

Covcath- 21
Newcath- 14

Ryan: I think Covcath's overall size will be the difference in this one. Newcath's offense is too one dimensional to knock off the Colonels. I like Covcath in this one.

Covcath- 31
Newcath- 21

Guyn De-Comitts from Charlotte

Just got off the phone with stand out senior Ge'Lawn Guyn (photo), and he informed me that he is now de-committed from Charlotte and re-opening his recruitment. The 6'3 SG from Scott County High School is considered by many to be one of the top 2 prospects in the state of Kentucky.

One of the biggest reasons for his decision was that he felt he rushed in to things rather than seeing what other opportunities were out there for him. Guyn stated that he'd like to open things back up so he can fully weigh all of his options and then make a decision whenever the time is right.

A lot of schools have been in contact with Guyn and when asked which schools were currently showing interest and staying in contact with him, he gave the following list: Indiana, Ohio State, South Carolia, Coastal Carolia, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Georgetown, Northwestern, Hawaii, and Memphis.

With how talented Ge'Lawn is, and his senior season not even played yet, I'd expect that list to grow. Over the summer Guyn played with Indiana Elite and was very impressive against some of the best competition in the country.

2012 Tidbits

Brett Blevins of Hoopsreport.com recently listed a few players that could surprise some people in the 2012 class. Here is what/who he mentioned:

Charles Foster, 6'0 pg from Trinity High School in Louisville, turned a lot of heads this summer. He is hearing from Xavier, Auburn, Oklahoma St, and Oregon State. Foster is a top 150 type talent.

Devon Rowan, 6'7 250 lb PF, is a strong bodied forward who is also receiving D1 interest. Rowan, from North Oldham High School, has heard from Eastern Kentucky, Cincinnati, Wright State, Detroit, and Indiana State.

These are a couple names to add to the likes of Jaylen Beckham, Tamron Manning, and Isaiah Ivey, when discussins Kentucky's class of 2012. This trio played very well for their Hoop Dreams squad this summer.

One other name in 2012 that not a lot of people know about, but will hear about soon, is Jaleel Cousins. Jaleel, 6'8 250 lbs, is the brother of UK freshman Demarcus Cousins. The younger Cousins, who hasn't played the game that long, is still growing and could surpass his brother at 6'10. Look for him to explode upon the Kentucky scened in 2009-10 playing for Tates Creek High School in Lexington.

NKY Rankings: Week 5

  1. Highlands (13)
  2. Ryle
  3. Simon Kenton
  4. Conner
  5. Dixie Heights
  6. Boone County
  7. Covington Catholic
  8. Campbell County
  9. Holmes
  10. Holy Cross

A few thoughts:

  • After seeing Ryle Friday night against Dixie, I think they're a solid pick for #2. They were very impressive offensively in the second half against the Colonels of Dixie. Catch the replay of that game on nkysports.com
  • #3 and #4 is a toss up IMO. Having seen both Conner and SK I personally think Conner is the better of the two, but when you have a kid like Miles Simpson on your team it's tough to not have them ranked where they are. I think Conner is a little more complete defensively though. We'll know Friday night when these two meet up.
  • Dixie at #5 is about right. Offensively they're a little further along than Boone but their defense needs some work if they want to contend with Highlands or even Covcath.
  • Speaking of Covcath, it's nice to see them make their way back in the rankings. They were very impressive in their win over Beechwood Saturday. They seem to be coming along nicely under first year head coach, Dave Wirth.
  • Holmes at #9 looks about right to me. It's tough to get a true gauge on them since they've only played Cooper, Lloyd, and Bellevue from nky. Their week 7 match up against Dixie should tell us more about this team. Don't be surprised if they welcome the Colonels undefeated at 6-0. They should be favored in their next two games against Pendleton Co and Franklin Co.
  • Lastly, I still don't understand why Holy Cross is ahead of Beechwood. The Tigers beat the Indians and both teams dropped this past week's game. Oh well...the only ranking that really matters is who's #1 at the end of the year in each class.

Week 5 Predictions

It's hard to believe week 5 is already here and the regular season is half over for some teams. Here are our picks and predictions for this week:

Newport (1-2) @ Dayton (0-3)

The Wildcats are coming in off a tough 20-14 loss to Harrison Co while Dayton lost 40-27 to Lloyd. Both teams seem to be struggling early.

Predictions:

Lee: Newport will light up the Greendevils this week and should do it by 3 td's.

Newport 36
Dayton 7

Ryan: Dayton has shown they can put some points up on the board, but I don't think they'll have enough to knock off the Wildcats. Look for Newport to even their record at 2-2.

Newport 35
Dayton 19

Ryle (2-1) @ Dixie Heights (2-2)

The Raiders come in to Dixie after a 45-0 win over Newcath this past week, while Dixie suffered their second straight loss to Conner 36-20. In the nkysports.com game of the week, Ryle will try to spoil the Colonels homecoming.

Predictions:

Lee: This is a big game for both teams and with the way the Raiders are playing and Dixie coming off 2 losses, I look for Ryle to take this one by a TD.

Ryle 21
Dixie 14

Ryan: I think Ryle's running game really wears down the Colonels in a shootout. Dixie has shown they're vulnerable against good rushing teams, while Ryle has shown good passing teams can have success against them. Still, I like the Riaders.

Ryle 38
Dixie 27

Boone Co (1-2) @ Highlands (4-0)

The Rebels come in this one limping big time after suffering a 63-14 loss to Anderson, OH last week. Highlands on the other hand knocked off Cincinnati Withrow 21-0. Can Highlands keep the momentum going? Or do they get caught looking ahead to their nationally televised game against Cincy St. X?

Predictions:

Lee: The Birds are playing their first home game of the season in front of a homecoming crowd so I predict this one to be a win for Highlands. Boone Co is just too one dimensional.

Highlands 51
Rebels 16

Ryan: With Cincy St X a week away, I look for Dale Mueller to keep the offense very "vanilla." Still, I don't see the Rebels stopping the Ft. Thomas squad.

Highlands 42
Boone Co 10

Conner (4-0) @ Holy Cross (2-1)

Cougars come in off a 36-20 win over Dixie, while the Indians come in off an emotional one point OT loss to Beechwood, 36-35. Can the Indians rebound against a good 6A Conner squad?

Predictions:

Lee: Although I think this one will be close, I like the Cougars to continue to roll and pull out the victory over the Indians. Nick West should have a nice game in a battle of two stud Qb's.

Conner 38
Holy Cross 24

Ryan: Look for Conner to light the scoreboard up. Holy Cross simply doesn't have the personnel to stop the Cougars offense. In a homecoming for Coach Trosper to Tom Ellis Field in Covington, I like the Hebron boys.

Conner 41
Holy Cross 14

Cooper (2-1) @ Lloyd (1-2)

Cooper is coming off a tough 28-21 loss to Holmes, while Lloyd comes in off a 40-27 win over Dayton. Can the Jags rebound and improve to 3-1 heading in to district play?

Predictions:

Lee: Cooper let me down last week but should rebound to take the Juggs on the road.

Cooper 22
Lloyd 18

Ryan: Dvontae Bradley should be the difference in this one. Cooper found ways to keep Holmes from keying on their stud RB in the second half of last week's game by getting QB Schulkers involved and I expect that to continue this week. Jagswin on the road.

Cooper 35
Lloyd 21

Beechwood (1-2) @ Covcath (1-3)

Both teams picked up their first wins of the season this past week. Beechwood came from behind to beat Holy Cross 36-35 in OT while Covcath dropped the Camels 33-14. Who gets their second win of the season?

Predictions:

Lee: I really think the Colonels are improving and with this game being played in Park Hills I like Covcath in a shootout. I think both Qb's will have a good game running and throwing the ball.

Covcath 41
Beechwood 28

Ryan: Covcath did some great things this past week and got both Alex Connelly and Leo Schaefer involved to take some pressure off Erpenbeck offensively. I expect the Colonels to continue to improve and take this one at home.

Covcath 35
Beechwood 22

Other Predictions:

Scott @ Harrison Co

Lee: Harrison Co 36-18
Ryan: Scott 28-21

Shawnee @ Ludlow

Lee: Shawnee 21-7
Ryan: Shawnee 35-0

Holmes @ Bourbon Co

Lee: Holmes 28-14

Highlands nationally ranked

The Bluebirds recently moved up a few spots in several polls and here is where they stand after 4 weeks:

ESPN Fab 50:

#25 Highlands (Fort Thomas, KY) 4-0 Last Week: 28
Austin Collinsworth, son of Tv analyst Cris Collinsworth, carried 12 times for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the defending state class 5A champion Bluebirds to a 21-0 blanking of Cincinnati Withrow. Highlands takes on rival Boone Co (Florence, KY) in this week's game.

Maxpreps Xcellent 25:

#20 Highlands (Fort Thomas, KY) 4-0 Last Week: 20
Highlands continues to handle it's business against early season opponents, besting Withrow,OH 21-0. The Bluebirds host Boone Co on Friday night.

Rick Bolus' top players in KY

Saw this posted on Mike Fields' blog:

Top 12 Seniors:
  1. Curtis Washington (Elizabethtown)
  2. Ricardo Johnson (Holmes)
  3. Elijah Pittman (Holmes)
  4. Chad Jackson (Scott Co)
  5. Ge'Lawn Guyn (Scott Co)
  6. Donovan Gibbs (Iroquois)
  7. Elisha Justice (Shelby Valley)
  8. Josh Sewell (Trinity)
  9. Aaron Watts (McCreary Central)
  10. Dakotah Euton (Scott Co)
  11. Matt St. John (South Laurel)
  12. Jomari Bradshaw (Waggener)

Best of the Underclassmen:

  1. Chane Behanan (Bowling Green)
  2. George Fant (Warren Central)
  3. Jaylen Beckham (Lexcath)
  4. Vinny Zollo (GRC)
  5. Remy Abell (Eastern)
  6. Timmy Knipp (Elliott Co)
  7. Darryl Hicks (North Oldham)
  8. Desmond Dorsey (J'town)
  9. Robbie Stenzel (GRC)
  10. Trey Williams (Greenup Co)
  11. Jordan Shanklin (Warren Central)
  12. Josh Stroud (Fairdale)

A few thoughts:

  • Curtis Washington as the best player in the state for the c/o 2010? I think Bolus is looking at the USC commitment WAY too much. No way Washington is the best big man in the state. I'll take Pittman, Gibbs, and Euton any day of the week over Washington. All three are much better prospects and have more complete games for their size.
  • Ge'Lawn Guyn is a top 2 talent in the state. If he isn't the best player in the state, the only person he's behind is Ricardo Johnson of Holmes. I personally like Ric as the best player in the state since he is the most complete player but Guyn put up some huge numbers this summer playing some pretty stiff competition.
  • Josh Sewell of Trinity is another one that's too low. He is easily a top 5 player in the state and Euton of Scott Co is a top 6 or 7 player. No way he's the 10th best player in his class. He improved a lot over the summer, especially defensively.
  • In the underclassmen list, no way Zollo and Beckham are both ahead of Remy Abell of Eastern. He was very impressive this summer and is getting some serious D1 looks from big time programs. Abell very well may be the best player in the state for his class had Chane Behanan not transferred from Aiken, OH to Bowling Green.
  • I'd also have Robbie Stenzel and Jordan Shanklin rated higher than 9 and 11 as well. Stenzel is a top 5 player for his class and Shanklin is probably the best pg in the state for his class.
  • Bolus' ratings have never been very accurate and they're always questioned...these list are a prime example of why.

NKY Rankings: Week 4

From nky.com:

  1. Highlands (10)
  2. Simon Kenton
  3. Ryle
  4. Conner
  5. Dixie Heights
  6. Boone Co
  7. Holmes
  8. Covington Catholic
  9. Holy Cross
  10. Beechwood

Thoughts:

  • First, how can Holy Cross be ranked ahead of Beechwood when Beechwood just beat the Indians Friday night? I realize the game went in to OT and Beechwood came back to win, but that pick doesn't make much sense to me.
  • The rest of the top 10 looks pretty solid. Highlands didn't put on a huge offensive show like we were all expecting Friday night, but the defense pitched a shut out and Collinsworth had 185 yards on 12 carries.
  • Simon Kenton was very impressive in their 56-21 win over Shroder, OH. A little surprised they gave up 21 points, but any time you put 56 on the board, not much can really be said.
  • Ryle at #3 is a pretty solid pick. They were very impressive in their 45-0 win over Newcath. Scary thing is, the game could have been much worse. Elliott looked good for the Raiders. He runs very hard and had 126 yards on 13 carries.
  • NKY 6A should be exciting to watch this year. 4 of their 6 teams are ranked in the top 6 in the nky coaches poll. Simon Kenton looks to be the strongest right now but Ryle and Conner are both VERY solid and will be tough to beat. I personally like Conner as the best team in the district. We'll see.
  • How about Holmes? After beating Cooper 28-21 Friday night, they are now 3-0 for the first time since I believe 2000 or 2001. Big district game this week with Bourbon Co. Could it be their first step towards a district championship? Spoke with Coach Lickert after the Holmes/Cooper game Friday and he said if his team cuts down on their mental errors, they are going to be tough to beat but there weren't many positives from the W Friday other than his team played bad but still managed to gut out a W.
  • Lastly, it was good to see Covcath get their first W of the season Friday night under Coach Wirth. Don't look too far ahead but with CCH playing Beechwood this week, Newcath next week, and Scott the following week, they very well could have a winning record at 4-3 heading in to their final two games against Highlands and Dixie.

2009 Lloyd Invitational Brackets

The annual Lloyd Invitational Brackets have been released. The tournament starts December 27th at 1:00 when Lewis Co and Villa Madonna meet to open the tourney up. All games are held in Lloyd's main gym unless noted otherwise. Here are the first round match ups:

Upper Bracket:

2:00 Campbell Co v Beechwood (Tichenor Middle School Gym)
3:45 Newport v Deming (Tichenor Middle School Gym)
1:00 Lewis Co v Villa Madonna
2:45 Holmes v Pendleton Co

Lower Bracket:

4:30 Bryan Station v Cooper
6:15 Holy Cross v Cumberland Co
8:00 North Laurel v Lloyd Memorial
9:45 Conner v Bellevue

Thoughts:

  • I really like the way the event coordinators set it up with Holmes and Bryan Station in opposite brackets. That is my championship game, with Holmes coming out on top. Last year they had the two best teams, Holmes and Seneca, meet in the first round.

  • The game that intrigues me most is the Holmes-Pendleton Co game. Holmes should win handily but it will be interesting to see how Freshman phenom Mason Monroe does against the defending state champs. It will be a great time for him to prove himself with a player like Ricardo Johnson guarding him.

Players to watch:

  • Holmes- 6'5 Ricardo Johnson, 6'5 Jeremiah Johnson, 6'8 Elijah Pittman

  • Campbell Co- 6'2 Brady Jolly

  • Villa Madonna- 5'10 Blake Bryan

  • Pendleton Co- 5'8 Mason Monroe

  • Bryan Station- 6'10 Andrew Adams

  • Lloyd- 6'2 Donnie Cheatum

  • Conner- 6'7 Tyler Hodges

Should be a great tournament with some very good games.

Week 3 Picks/Predictions

Week 3 is here and it's time for Lee and myself to pick the games:

Boone Co (1-1) @ Anderson (2-0)

Boone comes in off a 30-14 loss to Scott Co while Anderson comes in off a 44-0 win over Woodward.

Predictions:

Lee: Even though the Rebels have one of the top backs in the state, I think the #6 ranked D1 team in Cincinnati is too strong playing at home. I like the Redskins.

Anderson 40
Boone Co 24

Ryan: Anderson is a lot like Boone. Almost all of their yards this year have come on the ground and but have less than 100 through the air. I like Boone in a close one as they have faced better competition thus far and are more balanced on offense than the Skins.

Boone Co 29
Anderson 23

Holy Cross (2-0) @ Beechwood (0-2)

When was the last time these two teams met and Holy Cross was undefeated, while Beechwood was winless? Holy Cross comes in off a bye week while Beechwood comes in off a 48-20 loss to Highlands.

Predictions:

Lee: Beechwood showed glimpses of a bright future this past week with soph. RB Cameron Vocke but Holy Cross has a veteran squad and too much size. I like the Indians.

Holy Cross 36
Beechwood 22

Ryan: One of the biggest reasons Beechwood has struggled early on is injuries to key players. With the Tigers coming in to this game healthy, I expect to see a completely different Beechwood team. I like the Tigers.

Beechwood 31
Holy Cross 19

Scott (0-2) @ Bellevue (1-2)

Scott is really struggling right now after a 28-27 loss to Cooper this past week. Bellevue on the hand lost to a good Holmes team 24-8.

Predictions:

Lee: Bellevue is a very solid power football team and had opportunities last week against Holmes that they didn't capitalize on in a loss. Scott is a struggling program that will not have enough to beat the Tigers on the road.

Bellevue 38
Scott 20

Ryan: Scott's defense has been very bad against the run this year allowing Nick West to run all over them in week 1 and Dvontae Bradley to set a school record with 264 yards against them last week. With Bellevue being a power football team, I like them to control this one and get the W.

Bellevue 42
Scott 28

Covcath (0-3) @ Campbell Co (1-1)

Covcath comes in off a tough 44-35 loss while Campbell comes in on a high after coming from behind to beat Roger Bacon 31-28.

Predictions:

Lee: Campbell Co is coming off a huge win over Roger Bacon and Covcath showed improvement last week. I like the home Camels in a shootout.

Campbell Co 42
Covcath 28

Ryan: You have to feel like Covcath is eventually going to put it all together but I don't think this is the week they get their first win of the season. I think the arm and legs of Brayden Erpenbeck won't be enough to lead them past the Camels.

Campbell Co 35
Covcath 24

Cooper (2-0) v Holmes (2-0)

Cooper is coming in on a high after getting their biggest win of their program's short history, a 28-27 win over Scott. Holmes on the other hand cruised past Bellevue 24-8.

Predictions:

Lee: Cooper has one of the top backs in the are and are playing an undefeated Bulldogs team who got a nice road win over Bellevue last week. I like Cooper in this one as Dvontae Bradley rushes for over 100 yards and 2 TD's.

Cooper 28
Holmes 20

Ryan: Dvontae Bradley is one of the best backs in the area and has put up some huge numbers the first two weeks of the season but I think that comes to a stop this week. Cooper hasn't seen a defense yet that plays as physical or fast as Holmes will. Bradley gets his but it's not enough as Holmes wins at home.

Holmes 34
Cooper 13

Dixie (2-1) @ Conner (3-0)

Dixie is coming of an embarassing 49-28 loss while Conner destroyed Lloyd last week 64-0.

Predictions:

Lee: This will be a dandy as the Colonels travel to Hebron to take on the Nick West led Cougars. Dixie should rebound from last week's loss and I think they contain West. I like the Colonels by a 2 pt conversion.

Dixie 22
Conner 20

Ryan: These two teams have practically put up the same numbers offensively early on this season. Both have outstanding quarterbacks and explosive players on both sides of the ball. I like Conner's defense against Dixie's offense.

Conner 34
Dixie 27

(0-2) Dayton @ (0-2) Lloyd

Dayton comes in off a 20-16 loss to Taylor, OH while Lloyd was blasted by Conner 64-0 last week.

Predictions:

Lee: Lloyd has been eyeing this game on their schedule all year and especially after being drubbed last week. Dayton is slow out of the game and struggling. I like the Juggs by 4 td's.

Lloyd 42
Dayton 14

Ryan: The bigger school usually wins in match ups like this and with the schedule Lloyd has played so far, I see no reason why they don't win this one.

Lloyd 35
Dayton 13

Shroder,OH (1-1) @ Simon Kenton (2-0)

Simon Kenton comes in off a 49-28 win while Schroder won big over Finneytown last week, 56-0.

Predictions:

Lee: Shroder isn't even ranked in Ohio D2 and Simon Kenton looks poised for another 6A state championship run. Expect a blowout here for the Pioneers.

Simon Kenton 48
Shroder,OH 7

Ryan: Two words....Miles Simpson. Expect him to rush for atleast 200 yards and lead the Neers past the Ohio school.

Simon Kenton 49
Shroder, OH 0

Highlands (3-0) @ Withrow, OH (1-1)

Highlands comes in after defeating Beechwood 48-20 while Withrow was pounded 67-6 by Winton Woods.

Predictions:

Lee: Withrow was beaten bad last week by Winton Woods and I expect the same this week as the Bluebirds cross the river.

Highlands 48
Withrow 21

Ryan: The only thing that saves the Tigers from having 80 put up on them this week is the fact that their coach played under Coach Mueller 20 years ago when he was the head coach at Withrow.

Highlands 63
Withrow 14

NKYSPORTS.COM Game of the week
Ryle (1-1) @ Newcath (1-2)

The Breds got their first win of the year last week over Madison Central, 38-12 while the Raiders come in off a bye week. You can watch this game live Saturday night at nkysports.com.

Predictions:

Lee: This may be the breakout game for Travis Elliott as he solidifies himself as a top running back in the state as a sophomore. NCC has a very big line and Chris Kelly who will keep it close for a half but the pure size of Ryle will wear down the Breds. Expect a close one til half time then the Raiders breaking away.

Ryle 27
Newcath 14

Ryan: Ryle's thunder and lightning running game of Elliott and Eubanks will really wear the Breds down in this one. Hempel should be able to pick NCC's inexperienced secondary apart. I like the Raiders in the nkysports.com game of the week.

Ryle 35
Newcath 20

Heading in to week 3, here are the results of the "Pick Em Challenge" between myself and Lee:

Lee: 24-3
Ryan: 20-7

Ricardo Johnson Commits

Brett Blevins first reported it earlier tonight on his Twitter page, but Ricardo Johnson has officially committed to play for the Ohio Bobcats. Coach John Groce gave RJ an in home visit when he decided to commit. Ricardo was rated by Rick Bolus' high potential recruiting service as the #1 prospect in the state.

I personally think this is a good move for Ric. He can come in and play right away and will be a star at Ohio for 4 years. I think he should have waited to see what else comes his way, but you can't fault the kid for pulling the string early and getting it out of the way so he can focus on his high school season. RJ chose Ohio over both Bradley and Western Kentucky. He had a visit scheduled for Western Kentucky coming up and several other schools such as Oklahoma St were starting to show serious interest. Stay tuned for more as I'll try to get a word with Ric this week and and get some feedback on his decision.

Team Spotlight: Cooper Jaguars

Although their program is only two years old, the Cooper Jaguars have already improved by leaps and bounds. At this time last year, the Jags were 0-2, having been outscored 102-8. Through two weeks this year, the squad from Burlington is 2-0 and already scored more than half the points that they scored in the entire season last year. In week 1, the Jags upset Louisville Shawnee by a score of 49-20 and this past week, Cooper scored their biggest win in their program's short history; a 28-27 victory over Scott. I recently caught up with head coach Randy Borchers for a Q&A segment about the direction of his program and here is what he had to say:

Q: What's the biggest difference you've noticed in your team this year compared to last?

A: There are two major differences that we see in our team from last season. The first difference is that our players are playing with confidence and believe that they can win. Last season our players were not sure of themselves. They were trying to learn our schemes and were playing not to lose, rather than to win. The second major difference with our team is that they are stronger and quicker than last season. This offseason was huge for our football team and the players made the commitment to work hard and make themselves better football players. I believe this is a major reason that we are 2-0 and that our players have the confidence that they can compete in Northern Kentucky.

Q: How has the early season success helped with the confidence of your players?

A: I believe that our players came in to this season believing that they can compete, but now they believe that they can win. The early success has allowed our players to realize that people now have expectations on this football team. Last season, people expected us to lose but this year people are starting to believe in us and the excuses of being a new program are no longer accepted.

Q: How can success this year help your program in the future?

A: Obviously, we are trying to build a winning tradition here at Cooper. The more success the players have this year, the more it will carry over to next season. We have got to make sure that our players do not accept losing and that they get an understanding of what it feels like to win. The more we win this season the more excited the incoming freshmen will be next season to be apart of a winning program. We understand that the success we want will not come over night but it is a building process. The more success we have this year the stronger the foundation will be for the future.

Q: What are the keys for your team to finish the rest of the season strong?

A: We have to improve every week. We are still very young and our players have a lot to learn about the game of football. As long as we can continue to teach the players and they continue to improve every week we should have a pretty good football team by the end of the season.

Q: Lastly, what is your outlook on this week's game against Holmes?

A: Holmes is a very good football team. They are very athletic and they have a ton of speed. Holmes is very well coached and their players play extremely hard. We have been preaching to our players all week that we must be disciplined and play assignment football. We know that we have to force Holmes in to long drives and cannot give up the big play. We feel that if we can do this and keep the game close until the fourth quarter than we will have a shot to win the football game.

Guyn heads 2010 Class

Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier Journal recently revised his 2010 rankings. Here is what he came up with:

  1. 6'2 Ge'Lawn Guyn, Scott Co- He's played this summer like Mr. Basketball.
  2. 6'5 Ricardo Johnson, Holmes- Johnson was names Sweet 16 MVP and Holmes will have a big time shot to repeat.
  3. 6'5 Josh Sewell, Trinity- Sewell has finally seemingly put it all together. He's already committed to Miami of Ohio and this summer was a beast.
  4. 6'7 Elijah Pittman, Holmes- He's so long and so skilled for his size. No scholarship offers yet but he's a player.
  5. 6'4 Chad Jackson, Scott Co- In the past year, Jackson has improved his all around game more than anyone in the state. His shooting ability is getting there.
  6. 6'8 Dakotah Euton, Scott Co- Whew, he's taken a lot of criticism over the past two years. But Euton is still a tough match up when he's on.
  7. 5'10 Elisha Justice, Shelby Valley- If he was an inch or two taller, the colleges would be swarming. He's a fantastic high school player.
  8. 6'7 Donovan Gibbs, Iroquois- Showed signs of special things this summer.
  9. 5'11 Thomas Jackson, Jeffersontown- He just makes things happen all the time.
  10. 6'4 Shaquille Wilson, Christian Co- Must play better this season.
  11. 6'4 Keisten Jones, Ballard
  12. 6'2 Aaron Watts, McCreary Central
  13. 6'9 Matt St. John, South Laurel
  14. 6'6 Orlando Rutledge, Fern Creek
  15. 6'9 Curtis Washington, Elizabethtown
  16. 6'1 Josh Whitaker, Hazard
  17. 6'1 Deonte Maddox, Seneca
  18. 6'7 Colt Barnhill, East Carter
  19. 6'2 Jarrod Polson, West Jessamine
  20. 6'0 Delquan Thomas, Eastern
  21. 5'11 Ian Chiles, Ballard
  22. 6'3 Tim Henderson, Christian Academy
  23. 6'2 Vance Hall, Franklin Co
  24. 6'5 Donovan Johnson, Shelby Co
  25. 6'6 Jomari Bradshaw, Waggener
  • Nky players to make Jody's "Others to watch" list: Jeremiah Johnson (Holmes), Demetrius Avery (Holmes), Stephen Kowolonek (Highlands), Mike Gabbard (Boone Co), Andy Earls (Boone Co), Daniel O'Conner (Scott)

Random Thoughts:

  • How does Jeremiah Johnson of Holmes not make this list in the 10-20 range? I don't know where Jody was all summer, but JJ is one of the most improved players in the state. There's no way there's 25 seniors in KY better than him. He is drawing interest from several D1 programs including UNC-Asheville, Akron, and Wright St. He averaged close to a double double last year at 9 ppg and 8 rpg and during the state tournament had two double doubles and finished in double figures every game. JD really dropped the ball on that one. I have a feeling JJ is going to surprise a lot of people this year.
  • When it comes to best player in the state, I think it's a toss up between Ricardo Johnson and Ge Lawn Guyn. Ricardo is the best all around player in the state as he can play any position on the floor and still be an all state player. Guyn sure is smooth though and can flat fill it up. His quickness, athleticism, and speed make him a tough match up. Offensively, I think he may be the most talented player in the state, not named Elijah Pittman.
  • Speaking of Pittman, I really don't see Sewell ahead of him. Sewell has improved his game a lot of this summer but would struggle big time against a player like Pittman who has size, versatility, and athleticism. If Pittman ever decides to get serious about his game, he's hands down be the best player in the state. The kid has an unreal gift and still hasn't realized it.
  • Shaquille Wilson at #10? I don't understand that pick...even when Jody says " Must play better this season" after listing him there. IMO Wilson is better suited in the 15-20 range. Jones (Ballard), Watts (MC Central), St John (SL), Washington (E'town), and Rutledge all would have been better picks for that spot.
  • Elisha Justice is a great high school player but Thomas Jackson of J'town is the best point guard in the state. I'd have Jackson in front of Justice. With that said though, Justice is still a top 10 talent.
  • Solid list as far as top 25 goes, but I'd switch several players around and add JJ somewhere in the 10-20 range. Either Donovan Johnson or Vance Hall would be my "odd man out" when adding Jeremiah Johnson in there.
  • One positive though is this class is so deep with talent, it's hard to include everyone in the top 25 without raising questions as to why a certain player was left out. There are atleast 30 kids in the c/o 2010 that will play at the D1 or D2 level. Should be an exciting year of hoops.

Ryle 20 Highlands 13 (Frosh)

Each week my partner Lee Witte will be covering the Highlands frosh team. Here is his breakdown of the game from last night:

The Ryle Raider frosh took care of business last night on their home field, holding the high scoring Bluebirds to 13 points while also improve to 3-0 on the season. Led by a strong running game, the Raiders look to have a bright future. #24 Travis Pavy and #44 Tanner Pulice led the ground attack for the Raiders. Pulice also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a TD just before halftime.

The Birds were led by their do it all QB/LB Donovan Mccoy, who ran and threw for decent yardage. McCoy was in on numerous tackles at LB and should be considered on of the best players in NKY at the freshman level. Jac Collinsworth also ran the ball well for the Birds, scoring on a 5 yard run in the 4th quarter.

Key turning point in the game was the kickoff return for a TD by the Raiders right before halftime to put them up 13-6 instead of 7-6. Also, a fumble by a Bluebird ball carrier that thwarted a long 3rd quarter drive at the Ryle 25 yard line took the wind out of their sails. The Birds looked poised to take it in for a score and would have either tied the game or put them ahead. Credit the Raider defense, a tough, hard hitting group who brought it on every play and forced the turnover.

The Raiders led 20-13 and had the ball with 4 minutes to play and driving, but on 4th and 3 from the Bluebird 18 yard line they decided to go for it. The Raiders have a very solid kicker, who had kicked a 41 yarder the week before, but elected to go for the W rather than playing it safe and kicking a FG and lost on the gamble. The Birds then took over on downs at their own 18 with 2:14 to play. McCoy engineered a drive down the field with a mixture of nice runs and a passed but the play of the drive was a 35 yard TB pass from Collinsworth to Luke Turner to keep the drive alive. With 1st and 10 and at the Raider 25 yard line, the Bluebirds drive stalled as the Raider defense stuffed 2 running plays and forced an imcompletion on 3rd down. McCoy was pressured on 4th down and threw a fade pattern to David Christian that hung up in the air and was picked off at the 2 yard line. The Raiders were content to take a knee and finish the game with a 20-13 W.

These two teams could meet later in the year when the playoffs come around. Congrats to the Raiders in their big win.

Ricardo Johnson Basketball Diary

Ricardo Johnson will be doing a basketball diary for hoopsreport.com over the next few weeks about his life, recruitment, and pursuit of back to back KY state championships.

The following is part one of the series in which he recaps last year, updates his recruitment, and gives us a look in to the upcoming 2009-2010 season:

Dear Fans,

Last year's state championship was hard work. Becoming a good player and good team isn't easy. It takes working out every day. Doing the little things. Sometimes I'll even do push ups and sit ups at home, knowing they'll make a difference in my game.

How hard you work could help you reach your goals. It could result in winning awards such as a state championship, state tourney MVP, and defensive player of the year. You could also be recruited by some of the top basketball programs in the country. Once upon a time, I was hearing from Xavier, UC, Oklahoma St, Butler, and many more.

I recently took an official visit to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. Being my first visit, and travelling alone, I liked it. It reminded me so much of Covington and Cincinnati, and how they are close to one another. To me, the campus was like Holmes High School...on a hill, not too big, not too small, but just right.

This experience is so unique. I have more visits to look forward to.

I'm also looking forward to another hard working season and earning another state championship. We can achieve it with the hard work of my teammates and the time we put in the gym.

I'll keep you updated on my progress.

Sincerely,
Ricardo Johnson

NKY Rankings: Week 3

Three weeks of football are in the books and the Kentucky Enquirer has released their rankings:

1. Highlands

2. Simon Kenton

3. Conner

4. Ryle

5. Boone Co

6. Dixie Heights

7. Holy Cross

8. Campbell Co

8. Holmes

10. Newcath

Notes:

  • At this point, Highlands looks to be on a whole nother level compared to other teams around the area. SK is a solid pick at #2 though. They were very impressive in their 49-28 win over Dixie Heights.
  • I still think Holy Cross is too high at #7. We'll find out more about them Friday night when they take on Beechwood.
  • Newcath is better than their weeks 1 and 2 performances against Dixie and SK. I have a feeling they are going to start turning things around after their big 38-12 win over Madison Central Friday night. Saturday's match up with Ryle will tell just how much they've improved.
  • Nkysports.com will be covering the Newcath/Ryle game live Saturday night.

Beckham heads class of 2012 Rankings

As done with the class of 2011, the Louisville Courier Journal and Jody Demling also ranked the class of 2012. Heading the class is Lexcath star Jaylen Beckham (photo, left). Beckham is the only player in the class of 2012 that has garnered enough attention to land him in several national top 100 and top 150 rankings. Here is how the list looked:
1. 6'0 Jaylen Beckham (Lexcath): A lot of the bigger schools have started to call and he's only going to get better as he matures and fills out.
2. 6'4 Tamron Manning (Scott Co): The best and most versatile player in a very deep and strong class at Scott Co.
3. 6'1 Isaiah Ivey (Scott Co): Will become more of a key player on the varsity this season with the Cardinals and will get better and better. Shows flashes of "wow."
4. 6'6 Mike Terry (Fairview): Played at Rose Hill last season and led the Royals in scoring. Was hurt some this summer but college coaches love his game.
5. 6'1 Jordan Brewer (LaRue Co): The son of former University of Louisville player James "Boo" Brewer", the youngster has the talent and the swagger.
6. 6'1 Taylor Barnette (Lexington Christian): Isn't going to "wow" you by being flasy, but he's as solid as they come and really played well this summer.
7. 6'0 Desmond Dorsey (Jeffersontown): Dorsey didn't play as well as a freshman, but he still has the ability to be a top-of-the-line player in this class.
8. 6'0 Charles Foster (Trinity): MAde huge strides this summer and has had some inquiries from some big time schools like Xavier, Auburn, Oregon St, and Oklahoma St.
9. 6'4 Daniel Ross (Jeffersontown): A bruising force in the middle.
10. 6'8 Devan Rowan (North Oldham): Big and physical player had a great summer with the Derek Smith All Stars and is getting stronger.
11. 6'1 Tanner Broughton (Knox Central)
12. 5'11 DeVante Clarkson (Elizabethtown)
13. 6'8 LeMon Gregory (Muhlenberg)
14. 6'4 B.J Combs (Hazard)
15. 5'7 Anthony Myrkes (Laurel Co)
16. 6'6 Matt Day (Buckhorn)
17. 6'0 Ryan Whetzel (Ashland)
18. 5'11 Kyle Bush (Rosehill)- Not sure if he's there or elsewhere?
19. 6'1 Troy Saxton (Trinity)
20. 6'3 Nathaniel Dieudonne (Trinity)

Chane Behanan heads Class of 2011 Rankings

Jody Demling and the Louisville Courier Journal recently ranked the top 25 players in the class of 2011 and Bowling Green's Chane Behanan (photo, left) was at the top. Here is what they came up with:

1. 6'7 Chane Behanan (Bowling Green): He's a beast. I'd say he's the best prospect of any class in the state. Ranked top 100 nationally for his class.

2. 6'6 George Fant (Warren Central): Will need to work on his shot for the next level, but a load to handle for the high school level.

3. 6'3 Remy Abell (Eastern): Drew a lot of praise from high level division I coaches for his play this past summer. If he keeps improving and grows a bit, could turn out to be a little better than a mid major player.

4. 6'8 Treg Setty (Mason Co): Growth spurt and hard work helped him rise in the rankings. Setty is long, can shoot the three pointer, and is very heady.

5. 6'4 Robbie Stenzel (Clark Co): A big time shooter and still the most consistent and smartest player statewide in this class.

6. 6'8 Vinny Zollo (Clark Co): Look for his second year in the state to really be big time. He really made a lot of strides during the off season.

7. 6'4 Josh Forrest (Paducah Tilghman): Don't forget him. He's from Western Kentucky and not a ton of hype but he's a player with a lot of skills.

8. 5'11 Jordan Shanklin (Warren Central): Injury ended his high school season and slowed him in the off season. He's tough to handle when 100%.

9. 6'2 Ryan Fucci (Tates Creek): Really improved from this time last year and will make Tates Creek a serious contender in the 11th region.

10. 6'7 Timmy Knipp (Elliott Co): Left to do a lot of work for the Lions- who lost four starters. Knipp can shoot and handle the ball well for a big man.

11. 6'4 Marcellus Barksdale (Tates Creek)

12. 6'7 Trey Williams (Greenup Co)

13. 6'4 Lyonell Gaines (Eastern)

14. 6'5 Leonard Smith (Fulton City)

15. 6'5 Donovan Kates (Christian Co)

16. 6'4 Arman Marks (Eastern)

17. 6'4 Scott Schuette (Lexcath)

18. 5'10 Damien Elam (Russellville)

19. 6'8 Jake Mcclanahan (East Ridge)

20. 6'1 Kyle King (Deming)

21. 6'4 Ryan Hudson (University Heights)

22. 6'4 Taylor Martin (Lexcath)

23. 6'5 Josh Stroud (Fairdale)

24. 6'2 Kevin Shaw (Seneca)

25. 5'11 Jordan Gilbert (Mason Co)

Best of the Rest:

Week 2 Picks and Predictions

Well, week 2 is here and it's time for our picks and predictions. Week 1 saw some great action and we hope for the same tonight. Here's our picks:

Highlands (2-0) @ Beechwood (0-2)

This game is the nkysports.com game of the week and can be viewed live at nkysports.com. Myself and Lee Witte will be covering the action in Fort Mitchell. Beechwood comes in 0-2 after dropping one to Dixie 47-7 last Saturday in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showcase. Highlands on the other hand started out slow but improved to 2-0 after an impressive performance against Ryle, scoring 34 straight en route to a 37-14 win.

Predictions:

Lee: I have to go with the Bluebirds who should take advantage of their size and numbers. However, the Tigers certainly will play better than they did last week according to Coach Rash.

Highlands 44
Beechwood 16

Ryan: Beechwood is down this year and Highlands has one of their best teams ever. The Birds size, speed and athleticism will be too much for the Tigers.

Highlands 49
Beechwood 14

Dixie (2-0) @ Simon Kenton (1-0)

Dixie was impressive in routing Beechwood 47-7 last week to improve to 2-0. Simon Kenton on the other hand played without star Miles Simpson and still was able to walk out of Nippert Stadium with a 29-8 win over Newcath.

Predictions:

Lee: This will be one of the best games of the year in a clash of Kenton County Schools. Expect a shootout as many teams have many offensive weapons. I am going with the Pioneers at home.

Simon Kenton 37
Dixie Heights 24

Ryan: Dixie has looked impressive so far but against two smaller teams who couldn't match their size or athleticism. SK will provide match up problems for the Colonels and are deep at multiple positions. I like the Neers.

Simon Kenton 28
Dixie Heights 17

Holmes (1-0) @ Bellevue (1-1)

The Bulldogs will travel to Bellevue in week 2 to take on the Tigers. Holmes comes in 1-0 after an impressive 41-12 win over Lloyd, while Bellevue comes in 1-1 after beating Newport 40-24 last week.

Predictions:

Lee: The Tigers are a very good class A squad and have a power running game led by Buckler/Slater but I'm not too sure they can stop the overall team speed of Holmes. The Bulldog QB has been very impressive and should have a big night spoiling the Tigers home opener. The Tigers will be a better team for facing a speedy Bulldogs team, though.

Holmes 38
Bellevue 22

Ryan: Holmes is much improved and more experienced than years' past. Look for Holmes' team speed to cause a lot of problems for the Tigers on both sides of the ball. Damien Oden (wr/rb) and Jesse Jensen (qb) both had huge games last week against Lloyd. I like the Dogs on the road.

Holmes 34
Bellevue 14

Conner (2-0) @ Lloyd (0-1)

Conner will travel to Erlanger to take on the Juggs. The Cougars come in 2-0 after beating Scott 40-7 last week, while the Juggs are coming off a 41-12 loss to Holmes.

Predictions:

Lee: Conner is an offensive machine led by Qb Nick West who leads NKY in scoring with 6 td's and 1 xp. The Juggs struggled offensively in their opening game and I expect that to continue as they fall at home.

Conner 36
Lloyd 6

Ryan: Not much to really say about this game, other than the Cougars high powered offense will be way too much for the Juggs.

Conner: 42
Lloyd: 7

Cooper (1-0) @ Scott (0-1)

The Jags will travel to Taylor Mill to take on the Eagles. Cooper comes in 1-0 after upsetting Louisville Shawnee last week, while Scott is coming off a 40-7 loss to Conner.

Predictions:

Lee: Cooper is a much improved team led by junior Rb/Lb Dvontae Bradley, while Scott is struggling. I like Cooper on the road picking up their second victory of the season.

Cooper 24
Scott 8

Ryan: This game is a toss up IMO. Scott looked really bad against Conner in week one, but Cooper is no Conner. I think Bradley for Cooper is the difference in this one though.

Cooper 28
Scott 21

As for the rest of the games:

Lasalle, OH @ Covcath

Lee: Lasalle 40-14
Ryan: Lasalle 31-23

Roger Bacon, OH @ Campbell Co

Lee: Roger Bacon 32-18
Ryan: Roger Bacon 35-21

Newcath @ Madison Central

Lee: Newcath 14-7
Ryan: Newcath 28-10

Pendleton Co @ Newport

Lee: Newport 21-13
Ryan: Newport 27-21

Highlands 54 Boone Co 32 Freshman Final

In Freshman football action tonight it was the Highlands Bluebirds putting some points on the board early and often. Boone Co took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field to strike first, however, the Birds proceeded to run off 41 straight unanswered points of their own. The halftime score was 34 to 8 and the Birds opened up the 2nd half with a scoring drive of their own. It was then that the coaches started substituting freely.

Led by the strong running of Jac Collinsworth, who scored 3 first half TD's and showed some tremendous speed and the cannon arm of QB Donovan McCoy, the Birds bounced back from a 1 pt loss last Saturday to Class 6A Louisville St. X.

McCoy, a 6'0 165lb lefthander, threw several deep balls connecting with wideout David Christian numerous times throughout the game. He is also a threat to run the ball as he scored on the ground as well. I expect the Birds to be an early favorite to win the NKY Big School Title. They will face Ryle next week who is coming off a tough 1pt win over Cov Cath.

Q & A with Noel Rash Head Coach of Beechwood

I caught up with Coach Noel Rash the head coach of the defending Class A state champion Beechwood Tigers as they prepare to face the #1 Ranked Highlands Bluebirds this friday night at Edgar McNabb Field in Fort Mitchell.

1. What are some of your strengths this season?

We have good speed and experience at the skill positions.

2. How important is a kid like Joe Colosimo to your team at this point in the season?

Anytime you have special athlete they are always important, but even more important in a single A school where the depth is less in comparison to the 5A and 6A schools we are playing. The most important thing I want from my experienced players is “leadership when adversity strikes”. Time will tell how we handle this opening loss.

3. How is Zach Larimore feeling and will he be in pads playing this week?

Zach has been sick on top of his injury this week. He will see very little action come this Friday. We are hoping for about 10-15 plays and that is best case scenario. Our focus with Zach is he is healthy, conditioned and primed for the district and playoffs.

4. You stepped into a great situation at Beechwood and expectations yearly are to win a State Championship. Preparing to win the Class A state championship starts by scheduling bigger schools and playing a tough schedule. With last week's loss to Dixie how have the kids reacted in practice this week knowing they are facing the #1 Ranked Bluebirds of Highlands?

I have been very impressed with their attitudes and drive to get better this week. The problem is simple. I did not prepare my team to play last week and you couple that with a very talented and driven Dixie team and you get a 47-7 result. I have to do a better job of preparing our kids and we made some strides this week. As far as Highlands goes, our kids will line up and play their butts off. I would say our kids are more anxious than nervous. They have something to prove after last week and it may or may not be the best thing having to face a great team in Highlands. We (coaching staff) will make sure it is a positive no matter the outcome.
The whole point of this schedule is to find your weaknesses, get better and march into district play. We (coaching staff) fully understand both the positive and negative ramifications of scrimmaging and playing Conner, Boone, Dixie, Highlands, Holy Cross and Cov. Cath to start your season. The most important aspect is experiencing adversity in all of its colors and learning not only how to handle it, but how to feed off of that.

5. You have a very fine group of sophomores who won the Freshman championship last season over the Bluebirds. How have they stepped up this season and have any of those kids earned starting positions?

They are a fantastic group of young men who love this game. I am very pleased with their progress and yes some have made the transition to varsity football more easily than others. The main reason is physical maturity more than talent when you are trying to get a 15 year old to have success against 18 year olds. They understand their mission is to do everything in their power to get this year’s senior class and the 2009 Beechwood Football team a ring.

I'd like to wish Coach Rash the best of luck tomorrow night and this season in their quest for another State Championship Victory.

Manual Guard Commits

Manual High School senior guard Sean Samsel has made a verbal commitment to University of Findlay, according to his father Dean.

The 6'0 Samsel, considered to be one of the best shooters in the state of Kentucky, made a visit to the campus last week end and committed on Tuesday night.

Samsel played for the Derek Smith West team this past spring and summer and hit 10-plus three pointers in several games for the squad. He was also named to the all star game in the Five Star Basketball Camp played at Hoops.

University of Findlay is a Division II school that competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Oilers were 36-0 this past season and defeated Cal Poly Pomona in the NCAA Division II National Championship. They also played Xavier in a pre season exhibition, losing by just 3 points, 79-76.

NKY Rankings: Week 2

The second week of high school football is complete and in the books and here is what the new rankings look like at nky.com:

Team Points 1st Place votes Upcoming game

  1. Highlands 159 15 @ Beechwood
  2. Simon Kenton 134 1 v. Dixie Hights
  3. Ryle 114 @ Newcath
  4. Dixie Heights 101 @ Simon Kenton
  5. Boone County 97 v. Scott County
  6. Conner 89 v. Lloyd
  7. Holy Cross 43 @ Beechwood (9/11)
  8. Holmes 33 @ Bellevue
  9. Campbell Co 32 v. Roger Bacon
  10. Beechwood 31 v. Highlands

Thoughts:

  • I'm a little surprised to see Simon Kenton get the one first place vote. After the way Highlands dismantled Ryle Friday night, they are hands down the unanimous #1 team in NKY.
  • When was the last time Covcath and Newcath weren't ranked in the top 10 in NKY and Beechwood was #10? I know the Colonels are down and trying to make the transition under new head coach Dave Wirth, but CCH is definetly a top 10 team. I guess we'll find out over the next few weeks as Covcath plays Campbell Co (9/11), Beechwood (9/19), and Newcath (9/26). It's very possible CCH, Newcath, and Beechwood are all searching for their first win of the season when they meet up.
  • I think Holy Cross is a little too high at #7. I'd personally put Holmes in front of them or even Newcath, Covcath, Beechwood, or Campbell Co. All 5 of those teams would beat the Indians IMO.

If I had to come up with a ranking, I'd go with the following:

  1. Highlands
  2. Simon Kenton
  3. Boone County
  4. Ryle
  5. Dixie Heights
  6. Conner
  7. Campbell Co
  8. Covcath
  9. Newcath
  10. Beechwood
  • Both Holmes and Holy Cross are just outside of the top 10 at this point. Both will have to prove themselves over the next few weeks to make it in. Despite CCH, Newcath, and Beechwood all having down years and starting out rough, I just don't think either of those two would beat the traditional small school powers or the team from Park Hills.

Player Spotlight: Mike Gabbard (Boone County)

When it comes to success, Mike Gabbard of Boone County is no stranger to it. As a sophomore, Mike helped lead his team to a 21-8 record and this past season, helped lead his Boone County team to a 26-5 region runner up finish. One of the highlights for both he and his team was handing the eventual state champion, Holmes, one of it's only two losses on the season. As a junior, Gabbard averaged 9.3 ppg, 3.8 apg, and 2 spg. It was this past summer though that Mike's recruitment really picked up as he was one of the key pieces to Shining Star Sports-Mcfarland's 46-9 record. During that run, the 6'o point guard helped lead his team to an undefeated pool play record while competing in some of the top tournament around the country. Despite all of the success, Mike still has some unfinished business to tend to. I recently had the chance to catch up with him for a Q & A segment and here is what he had to say:

Q: Where do you feel you've improved most since the end of last season? What do you still need to work on?

A: I've improved most on my defense. I've concentrated more on becoming a lock down defender and improved on my outside shot also. I still need to work on moving without the ball and could use improvement on my shot.

Q: What are your personal and team goals/expectations for this coming season?

A: My personal and team goals are the same pretty much. I want to win state and go to state for sure and I want to push myself to make all district, all region, and possibly all state team as well.

Q: How did losing in last year's region championship to the eventual state champ help motivate you over the summer and for this coming season?

A: Losing to Holmes made me realize that we lost to the state champions by 3 points. We gave them a closer game than anyone at state did and that makes me want to work harder. Four more points and that would be us.

Q: Which schools are currently showing interest in you?

A: I have a full ride scholarship offer from Ashland University (DII in Ohio). I have made visits to both there and Morehead State. Morehead and Eastern Kentucky have both said they are going to watch me during workouts in September.

Q: What qualities are you looking for in a college program and what factors will come in to play when you sit down and decide where you'll further your education?

A: Factors for college include: Location/Distance, sometimes what division they are, my scholarship opportunity, playing time coming in, and most improtantly, a great education.

Q: Lastly, what do you feel you bring to your team both on and off the court?

A: I bring leadership and hard work to my team both on and off the court. My goal is to try and make everyone else better on my team as the season goes on.

Notes:

- First off, I'd like to thank Mike for his time and wish him the best of luck this coming season in accomplishing his goals.

- Although he is hands down the best pg this coming season in nky, don't be surprised if by January people around the state are talking about him as one of the top 5 pg's in the state as well. He is very talented and will really turn some heads this coming season when Boone gets out and plays around the state. Gabbard and teammate Ryan Popp will form one of the best backcourt duos in the NKY.

- Speaking of Boone, expect them to have a big season this coming year. They lose their team leader from last year in Stephen Mcfarland as well as several key role players in Corey Spaulding and Andrew Brown, but they will still be loaded. The Rebels return Gabbard, Ryan Popp, Ronald Cotton (probably one of the most athletic kids in the area), as well as 6'6 big man Andy Earls. Also expected to make an impact are Trevan Brown and Travis Montgomery. Both were big time players for the Rebels JV squad last season.

- As far as his recruitment goes and my evaluation of Mr. Gabbard, I expect him to land at a small D1 school. He is definetly talented enough to play at that level and I think he'd really excell at Morehead or one of the NAIA schools in Kentucky. I think NKU could also be a really nice fit for him as well. Either way, Mike will have his college education paid for which is the most important thing. He reminds me a lot of the Faulkner twins from Elliott Co this past season, only stronger.
