NKY Rankings: Week 2

The second week of high school football is complete and in the books and here is what the new rankings look like at nky.com:

Team Points 1st Place votes Upcoming game

  1. Highlands 159 15 @ Beechwood
  2. Simon Kenton 134 1 v. Dixie Hights
  3. Ryle 114 @ Newcath
  4. Dixie Heights 101 @ Simon Kenton
  5. Boone County 97 v. Scott County
  6. Conner 89 v. Lloyd
  7. Holy Cross 43 @ Beechwood (9/11)
  8. Holmes 33 @ Bellevue
  9. Campbell Co 32 v. Roger Bacon
  10. Beechwood 31 v. Highlands

Thoughts:

  • I'm a little surprised to see Simon Kenton get the one first place vote. After the way Highlands dismantled Ryle Friday night, they are hands down the unanimous #1 team in NKY.
  • When was the last time Covcath and Newcath weren't ranked in the top 10 in NKY and Beechwood was #10? I know the Colonels are down and trying to make the transition under new head coach Dave Wirth, but CCH is definetly a top 10 team. I guess we'll find out over the next few weeks as Covcath plays Campbell Co (9/11), Beechwood (9/19), and Newcath (9/26). It's very possible CCH, Newcath, and Beechwood are all searching for their first win of the season when they meet up.
  • I think Holy Cross is a little too high at #7. I'd personally put Holmes in front of them or even Newcath, Covcath, Beechwood, or Campbell Co. All 5 of those teams would beat the Indians IMO.

If I had to come up with a ranking, I'd go with the following:

  1. Highlands
  2. Simon Kenton
  3. Boone County
  4. Ryle
  5. Dixie Heights
  6. Conner
  7. Campbell Co
  8. Covcath
  9. Newcath
  10. Beechwood
  • Both Holmes and Holy Cross are just outside of the top 10 at this point. Both will have to prove themselves over the next few weeks to make it in. Despite CCH, Newcath, and Beechwood all having down years and starting out rough, I just don't think either of those two would beat the traditional small school powers or the team from Park Hills.
